6th Annual Greater Elmira Tennis Association (GETA) Strictly Doubles Tournament Results

For the first time in 6 years, the Greater Elmira Tennis Association (GETA) Strictly Doubles Tennis Tournament enjoyed some really great weather. All forecasts predicted temperatures in the 70’s and no chance of rain. This time the weathermen were right; both days provided perfect tennis weather and the Town of Elmira tennis courts provided the perfect setting. Sixty doubles teams (85 different players) from Painted Post, Binghamton, the Elmira-Corning area, Cortland, Ithaca, Hector, Prattsburg, Waverly/Sayre, Mansfield, Towanda, and Pittston participated in the tournament held on the weekend of September 20th. Five different events were contested this year: Men’s Open, Women’s Open and Mixed Open Doubles, along with the Youth/Adult (adult’s age must be over 18 and twice the age of the youth), and Century Doubles (ages of partners totaled must be 100 or greater) categories; both new last year.

The finals, played on Sunday, were very competitive with 4 of the 5 matches needing threes sets to determine the champions. It was “age” vs “youth” as two local teams were in the Men’s Open final. The #2 seeded team of Will Schirmer and Gary Marshall defeated #6 seeds Dan Freeman and Sam DeLuccia (Notre Dame and Horseheads High School players) 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3. Tracy Keel and Alice VanDeMark, the #1 seeds from Ithaca, won the Women’s Open event defeating the local team and #2 seeds Bonnie Lindquist and Dorothy Marshall 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. Last year’s returning champions, Jean and Julian Wright from Cortland, NY were defeated in the Mixed Open final by #2 seeds MaryEllen Halm and Tim Klee 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Will Schirmer became the only double winner of the weekend teaming with his son Sam to win the Adult/Youth event. They defeated the Mansfield team of Dave Fadio and Alex Makos by the scores of 6-4, 6-2. Wrapping up the weekend tournament, the Century Doubles event was won by the #1 seeded local team of Rich Rollins and Steve Forrest. They defeated the #2 seeds John Renz and Julian Wright 7-6 (10), 2-6, 6-4.

Each year this event becomes more and more popular attracting many new players. GETA would like to thank tournament directors John Renz and Russ Minier and the many volunteers for their work making this event a success.
