GETA Events and Membership

Volunteers from Greater Elmira Tennis Association (GETA) are hard at work preparing for a full summer of programs and events. They are also involved with a couple of new outreach programs that got underway this spring.

GETA partnered with Compeer, a program administered through Family Services of Chemung County, to teach basic tennis skills to their clients. Compeer recruits adults to befriend other adults who have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and to help them reintegrate into society. Volunteers and clients spend at least 4 hours per month interacting with one another and taking part in various activities.

GETA offered free clinics for the volunteers and clients to teach them about the many benefits of the lifetime sport of tennis. At the end of the session, GETA donated a bag of racquets and balls to Compeer for their clients’ use.

Michelle Page, Compeer Coordinator, was thrilled with this opportunity saying, “I can’t thank GETA enough for bringing this program to Compeer. Tennis will be a great activity for our clients and give them good physical exercise without overdoing it. Also, many of our clients are on a limited income and this will be an inexpensive activity for them.”

GETA also partnered with the Cub Scout pack based at St. Mary Our Mother Elementary School in Horseheads. The Scouts had fun learning tennis skills at a free clinic held on March 31. The enthusiasm of the kids led many of the parents to join in the fun. A few parents mentioned they used to play tennis many years ago and are looking forward to getting back on the courts with their kids.

The Greater Elmira Tennis Association has grown since its inception in 1997. Today, GETA’s Board of Directors is made up of a dedicated group of volunteers and professionals who come together to support community tennis programs that are open and accessible to all. GETA is a not-for-profit association which exists to promote and develop the game of tennis as a means of healthful recreation and physical fitness.
