OCC Lazers are National Champs

The Men’s Tennis Team from Onondaga Community College (OCC) was crowned the National Junior College Athletics Association Division III champion in May. The Lazers were the top seed among the eleven teams in the draw and won the championship at Collin County Community College in Plano , Texas .

Four OCC players received all-America awards: Ryan Sadowitz, Ryan Everett, Mason Drastal, and Jeff Kurtz, and Coach John LaRose won the National Coach of the Year Award.

LaRose has coached the Men’s Tennis Team at OCC for the past 18 years and the Women’s team for 21 years. LaRose has led the OCC Men’s Tennis Team to 13 national tournaments, but this is their first National Championship. He is assisted by Jeff Lonczak, a former player at OCC who was the 1999 National Doubles Champion and the 2000 National Singles Champion, and Bora Som.

Larose is also being inducted into the OCC Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements. The team was honored at the annual athletic awards banquet on June 7 and at a special reception hosted by the school’s President on June 12.

Onondaga Community College is also the recipient of the 2005 USTA Eastern Collegiate Award and the 2006 Western Regional Collegiate Award. OCC, along with Coach LaRose and his staff were honored for the success of their Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams, but also for the many community outreach programs they offer for youth and adults in Syracuse throughout the year.
