SOUTH TOWNS MUSTANGS COMPETE AT NATIONALS

ORCHARD PARK, NY – The United State Tennis Association has just completed the Junior Team Tennis National Championships the past two weekends in Mobile, Alabama. Junior Team Tennis has over 80,000 players participating across the country. It all begins on a local level and culminates with the Nationals where only the top teams from across the country compete for the Championship. The South Towns Mustangs of Orchard Park competed October 24 – 26 and was one of just sixteen teams to play in the 14 and Under Intermediate Division. The team was made up of six players from Orchard Park and East Aurora, Peter Borgesi (OP), Justine Brennan (OP), Taylor Cole (EA), Ryan Cromwell (OP), Sawyer Dina (OP) and Karli Hollins (OP). Coaching the Mustangs was Brian Johnson and Dan Johnson of South Towns Tennis Club.

The South Towns Mustangs finished in the top half of the tournament in seventh place. The team defeated teams from New Mexico, Minnesota and Puerto Rico. The Mustangs lost to eventual finalists Tennessee and to 6th place New Jersey. “This was a great showing, you can’t be more proud of the kids, great commitment from not just the players but from the parents as well,” said Dan Johnson, coach of the Mustangs.

One of the highlights of the weekend was Ryan Cromwell being awarded the USTA Sportsmanship Award, it is given to the player that best exemplifies what a player should be, fair, honest and a true sportsman. Only one boy and girl from each division is given such a prize. “Ryan from day one showed everyone what a true competitor is, he made everyone proud,” said Coach Brian Johnson.

Ryan Cromwell was not just the Sportsmanship Award winner he also finished with one of the top records in the tournaments at 6 and 1 giving Tennessee one of there only loses in the tournament.

Planning for next year the players are ready to compete, “It all starts up again in January, from a South Towns league, to districts, to regional, then sectionals at the US Open, hopefully it will conclude at Nationals again, great to give the kids goals to meet,” said Dan Johnson.
