Orchard Park, NY – Play Team Tennis New York and Hickory Hill Swim and Tennis Club hosted a Level 3 United States Tennis Association event on Saturday, June 6 in Orchard Park, NY. The event attracted junior players from across New York. Twenty-four participants competed in 8 divisions playing in a Round Robin format. “The Level 3 format is a great way to introduce tournament and match play, everyone played a lot of tennis” said Dan Johnson, coach at Hickory Hill and South Towns Tennis Club.

The highlights of the tournament were many, including a great win for Morgan Garlock (Alexandria Bay) defeating Lisa Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY) 8-6. Ryan Fishback (age 7) from Geneva, NY played in his first tournament. He won in two divisions--the10 and Under Boys and the Co-ed 8 and Under. Ryan beat Kyle Schmitt (West Seneca, NY), Derek Roehner (Silver Creek, NY) and Jesse Hollins (Orchard Park, NY). The girls in the 10 and Under division didn’t disappoint as Erika Cromwell from Orchard Park went undefeated having a tough match against her twin sister, Lauren. Cromwell also defeated Jesse Hollins and Nicole Kozinski (Lancaster, NY). Ryan Coppola (Orchard Park, NY) won the 12U Boys division with wins against Cooper Miller (Falconer, NY) and Jack McClaren (East Aurora, NY). A highlight of the 14U Boys division was the play of unbeaten champion Andrew Ferrentino (Orchard Park, NY) and runner-up Jeremy Sheehy of Orchard Park, NY. Tyler Moore of Buffalo played extremely well against Ferrentino before being defeated by a score of 8-6. The 18 and Under Boys was won by Ryan Cromwell from Orchard Park. He went undefeated with wins over Devin Kostrzewski, Matt Ferrentino, and Trevor Jachimowicz--all from Orchard Park and Nicholas Collesano of Buffalo. Match of the day was between Madison Bradley playing at her home club of Hickory Hill and Haley Hollins, both from Orchard Park. It was settled in a tie break with Bradley winning the match and title in the 12 and U Girls division. Alana Danieu of East Aurora came in third and Shayleen Brennan of Orchard Park placed fourth.

The tournament, for the benefit of Play Team Tennis New York, was directed by Dan Johnson and Brian Johnson who; in conjunction with the South Towns Tennis Club; is sending three teams (12 and Under, 14 and Under and 18 and Under) to compete at the Sectional Level of Junior Team Tennis at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on June 20 & 21. Winners in the 14 and 18 Divisions will advance to the Nationals in Alabama in the fall. “If you want to see children improve in tennis, give them a reason to play.” said Brian Johnson, coach at Hickory Hill and South Towns Tennis Club. Junior Team Tennis is the Little League of Tennis with over 85,000 players competing across the country.
