August 19, 2009 06:20 PM

USTA Eastern’s 11th Annual Camp A.C.E. (Achieving through Coaching and Education) took place at the University at Albany from July 19-25. Thirty-eight students between the ages of 14-18 from around the Eastern Section took part in the week-long program that combined tennis instruction with classroom courses aimed to help develop life skills. The 2009 Camp also included a guided tour of the State Capitol.

Elissa Kinard, Head Women’s Tennis Coach at SUNY Albany, and her staff provided the bulk of the tennis instruction throughout the week. They were assisted by several members of the USTA Eastern Staff along with teaching professionals from around the Section. Among them, Ron Dyson, USPTA Eastern Division President and the Director of the Dyson Tennis Academy in Rochester, spent time working with the students. In addition, Domingo Montes, incoming Program Director for Capital Region Youth Tennis Foundation (15-Love), and Jim Neal, Tennis Coach at Niskayuna High School and Tennis Director at Central Park in Schenectady, also helped out.

Two students from the Western Region, Kaiya Williams, a sophomore at Irondequoit High School, and Sonia Yu, a senior at Horseheads Senior High School, took part in the 2009 Camp. Williams also attended the 2008 Camp that took place in the Western Region at Colgate University. Yu was the recipient of a scholarship offered by Greater Elmira Tennis Association (GETA) and attended Camp A.C.E. for the first time.

Planning for the 12th Annual Camp A.C.E. is already underway. Visit www.eastern.usta.com for updates as to where next year’s Camp will take place. In addition, an article and pictures from this year’s Camp are posted on the Eastern web site.
