September 16, 2009 09:37 PM

USTA Eastern, the Western Region, and USPTA collaborated to conduct a workshop for High School Coaches on Thursday, August 27 at Lancaster High School (outside of Buffalo). Boys and Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity coaches from area School Districts participated in the first of what will become an annual event.

Steve Pekich, the USPTA Professional of the Year, and Michelle Skelley, an RCW National Trainer and Quick Start Tennis (QST) Specialist, facilitated the on court portion of this interactive workshop. They covered topics that included dynamic stretching and warm up activities, managing large groups, running effective team practices, and the Top 10 Games Every Coach Should Know.

After the three-hour on court workshop was over, coaches stayed for dinner and presentations on the USTA No-Cut Coach program, the USTA School Tennis Program, and for a discussion of local rules and regulations that was conducted by Jason Krasinski, the Erie County Interscholastic Conference (ECIC) Chairperson for Boys’ Tennis. All of the attendees received a folder with presentation outlines and other materials.

A similar workshop took place on Saturday, August 29 at Midtown Athletic Club in Rochester. Ron Dyson, Billy Nealon and Ajay Pant; three Nationally-recognized tennis professionals from the Rochester area; presented at this workshop.

Both workshops will take place again in August 2010. There will also be a High School Coaches Workshop at the Eastern Tennis Leadership

Conference on Friday, January 30, 2010 in White Plains. Check out www.eastern.usta.com for more details on the Leadership Conference, or contact Joe Steger at steger@eastern.usta.com for more information regarding any of these events.
