November 4, 2009 03:07 PM

The Rochester Junior Grand Prix just completed its 19th successful year with the season ending “Masters” Tournament at Tennis Club of Rochester (TCR).rct2

Grand Prix tournaments are played during the summer months at various locations throughout Rochester. In addition to TCR, this year’s events took place at Midtown Athletic Club, Harley School, Mendon Racquet and Pool Club, and at the following high schools: Brighton, Irondequoit, Penfield, Pittsford-Mendon, and Spencerport.

Events include divisions for both boys and girls that range from 10 and under through 18 and under. Most of the events include just singles play, although a doubles only Grand Prix tournament was added a few years ago and has been very popular. Participants accumulate points during the summer which determine the top eight participants in each age group who are then invited to take part in the Masters tournament. All of the various junior programs and clubs in Rochester actively support the program by encouraging participation and allowing for use of their courts.

The Grand Prix is generously sponsored by local businesses, appreciative parents, and grant support from both the Junior Tennis Foundation and Western Region of USTA Eastern. The cost per tournament is kept below $10, which helps contribute to the high number of participants, with some weekend tournaments drawing more than 180 players.rct1

Additional sponsorship and overall coordination comes from Rochester Community Tennis (President Barry Prince), a local CTA that was established to promote junior tennis. The Grand Prix website is: www.rochesterjuniortennis.com. Jon Goldsmith has been the Tournament Coordinator for the past several years and has done a fantastic job in that role.
