Auburn Community Tennis (ACT) Kickoff Event
A newly formed Community Tennis Association named Auburn Community Tennis (ACT) held an event on Saturday, October 9 at Tinkers Guild to give the organization exposure and raise some funds to help it get off the ground. It was a great success as approximately 100 people attended and more than $3,000 was raised.
The organization, which will focus on growing junior tennis is the greater Auburn area, is planning to work closely with USTA Eastern to introduce tennis in area schools and to build a robust summer youth tennis program. ACT hopes to be in full swing by the Spring of 2011, and ACT Board Members and Volunteers plan to make a significant impact. The mission of ACT will be to make tennis available to all interested youth in Auburn and the surrounding communities.
The October 9 event included appearances by featured guests Luke Jensen, Head Coach of the Syracuse University Women’s Tennis Team, and Assistant Coach Shelley George. Jensen, a former French Open Doubles Champion, spoke about the benefits of promoting junior tennis.
The event was hosted by John and Nancy Mortimer, Owners of Tinkers Guild. Bernie Simmons of Balloons Restaurant and the Mortimer’s provided food and beverages.  Live entertainment was provided by Jeff Connor and Friends. Coach Shelly Connors and the Auburn High School Girls’ Tennis Team provided decorations and helped promote the event.
USTA Eastern donated raffle items, and Western Regional President Steve Pekich and Western Region Tennis Service Representative Joe Steger were on hand to meet the guests.
