Miller Tennis Center hosts Marsh Cup

The Marsh Cup is an Institution in the Western Region.  It has been taking place since the early 1900’s.

Marsh Cup is a yearly competition that features teams from Buffalo , Rochester , Syracuse, and Toronto.  This weekend-long celebration of tennis rotates among the cities, so that each plays host to the event once every four years.

It was Buffalo’s opportunity to host the event in 2011.  Despite the threat of showers that stuck around for most of the weekend and cooler than normal temperatures on Sunday, the matches were all played outdoors on the clay courts at Miller Tennis Center.

Competition began on Saturday, June 11 with semifinal matches pitting host Buffalo against Toronto and Rochester against Syracuse.  The team from Rochester prevailed in a tight match vs. Syracuse, winning 10 of the 17 individual matches.  Buffalo bested Toronto in the other semifinal by a score of 12-5.

The Championship match took place on Sunday with Rochester beating Buffalo, 15-2.  Rochester had a very strong team.  They won twelve of the fourteen Open Division matches they played over the weekend.  Marcus Fugate and Jason Tahir excelled, winning both of their Open Singles matches in straight sets.  They also teamed up to win at Men’s Open Doubles in the Championship match.

The Western Region is a proud sponsor of the Marsh Cup, and we congratulate the winning team from Rochester.  We would also like to commend Russ Reinagel who spent countless hours before and during the event to ensure everything ran smoothly and thank Miller Tennis Center for providing a wonderful venue.  The 2012 competition is scheduled to take place in Toronto.
