JTT in the Western Region

USTA Eastern hosted a Junior Team Tennis (JTT) Tournament on Friday, August 2 at South Towns Tennis Club in Orchard Park. 10 and under youth representing several communities, including the Towns of Aurora, Clarence, Hamburg, Lancaster, and Orchard Park, took part in the event.

The Tournament served as the culmination of 10 and Under Tennis summer programs, the USTA initiative which employs shorter racquets, smaller courts, and lower-bouncing balls to teach tennis to kids.  JTT Buffalo Area League Coordinator (ALC) Kathy Connelly was on hand to assist with the event and to promote the local JTT League to the players and their parents.

The next day, Midtown Athletic Club in Rochester served as the host site for a USTA Jr. Team Tennis (JTT) Regional event.  Tennis players from Batavia, Buffalo, Corning, Elmira, and Ithaca took part in an 18 and under non-advancing event. The matches were very competitive and exciting to watch. A special thanks to May Hines and Steve McGary for their help coordinating the event.

The ‘Summer Baseliners’ (coached by Sudha Bommaraju), the champion of the JTT Buffalo 18 and under Intermediate League, and the 10 and under ‘Blue’ team (coached by Alison Courtney), also from JTT Buffalo, will advance to the JTT Summer Sectionals taking place on August 17-18 in Mount Kisco, New York.

The Region is proud to be represented by these teams, and we wish them best of luck at Sectionals. For more information on JTT, visit www.eastern.usta.com, and for more information on JTT Leagues in the Western Region, contact Joe Steger, Tennis Service Representative, at steger@eastern.usta.com.
