RRTEA 10 and Under Tennis Camp

The River Rock Tennis and Education Association (RRTEA) 10 and Under Tennis Camp ended its 8-week program last week with a USTA Play Day and a Family Barbecue sponsored by USTA Eastern and West Side & Black Rock-Riverside Neighborhood Housing Services for all campers and their families.

Thirty-eight neighborhood kids, including newly immigrated children from Burma, Iran, Iraq and other nations throughout the world registered for the June/July tennis camp. The camp was lead by Canisius High School Tennis Coach Emily McAdoo, a member of the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR). Assisting Coach Emily was neighborhood youth bilingual coach Hanni Htat, along with youth coaches River Saxbury and Joshua and Courtney Fox.

With participants speaking several languages, all the campers came together and had fun participating in the sport of tennis. Language barriers were of little concern for the kids who all exhibited a positive attitude and willingness to learn throughout the eight-week camp.

Scholarships were made possible through funding from USTA Eastern, Buffalo Niagara Community Tennis Association (BNCTA), New York State Senator Mark Grisanti, City of Buffalo Councilmember Joseph Golombek, James Grace Funeral Home, Believe in Black Rock, Unknown Club, and Black Rock Pharmacy. Many thanks go out to sponsors and supporters as RRTEA continues to build community and healthy families one racquet at a time.
