USTA Eastern, the Western Region, and USPTA Collaborate to Conduct Workshops

Tennis Club of Rochester Participants
High School Coaches Workshops
USTA Eastern, the Western Region, and USPTA collaborated to conduct a workshop for High School Coaches on Wednesday, August 25 at Lancaster High School (outside of Buffalo). Boys and Girls’ Varsity and Junior Varsity coaches from area School Districts participated in the second annual workshop.
USTA Eastern Clinician Steve Pekich, a former USPTA Professional of the Year, and Michelle Skelley, a USTA Eastern Clinician and an RCW National Trainer/QuickStart Tennis (QST) Specialist, facilitated the on court portion of this interactive workshop. They covered topics that included dynamic stretching, how to plan successful team practices, team building, self-feeding competitive drills, and the essential games every coach should know. The Trainers worked through sample practice plans for both early and mid-season practices with all of the coaches.
After the three-hour on court workshop was over, coaches stayed for dinner and presentations on the USTA No-Cut Coach program and the USTA School Tennis Program. All of the attendees received a folder with presentation outlines and other materials.
A similar workshop took place on Saturday, August 28 at Tennis Club of Rochester.   USTA National Trainer Feisal Hassan from Richmond, Virginia delivered a presentation entitled, “Creative Drills for Doubles.” Hassan is a USPTA Master Professional, Head Tester, and a former Middle States Professional of the Year. His presentation was very well received attracting a large number of high level coaches from throughout the Western Region.
Both workshops will likely take place again in August, 2011. There will also be a High School Coaches Workshop at the USTA Eastern Annual Meeting and Volunteer Development Workshop on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel in White Plains. Check out www.eastern.usta.com for more details on the Annual Meeting, or contact Joe Steger at steger@eastern.usta.com for more information regarding any of these events.
